Patient of the Month September 2025

Our patient of the month is Mr Ian McGill who is treated by Rhian in Salisbury...

Where was the pain?
My most recent treatment with Rhian has been for shoulder pain, a rotator cuff and tendon issue - I had limited movement and quite a lot of pain.

What caused the pain initially do you think?
Possibly too much golf which I think irritated it. But I have older injuries being ex- military, a life of parachuting, long marches carrying a heavy load, jumping off vehicles and such, telling myself to just toughen up!

What made you decide to seek help from osteopathy?
I first saw an osteopath many years ago whilst still serving and that helped so when I moved locally, 30 years ago I began seeing Rhian. I had tried the usual route of physiotherapy but that hadn’t got to the root cause of the pain in various areas of my body.  I do believe that getting to the cause helps going forward rather than just being treated for my symptoms.

How did Rhian treat you?

She used a mixture of gentle manipulation, dry needling, massage and looks at the body as a whole. She gives excellent advice and exercises to follow up with in between appointments. But, I have to say, she really does have true healing fingers!

Has she helped you in any other way?
She gave me advice about nutrition, suggested Pilates and other forms of exercise and general ways I can help myself. I’ve also received Shockwave Therapy for my shoulder tendons, for my wearing knee and sacro-iliac joint. This treatment, although a bit uncomfortable, was incredible at reducing the pain so I could then gain function back at these areas. I find her very approachable and able to ask all sorts of questions.

What has been the most beneficial aspect of your treatment?
Being able to play golf easily again! But also feeling like myself , it has always been important to me to keep myself fit and to be able to keep enjoying doing things that I love, such as golf and walking.

What would you say to anyone who is undecided about Osteopathy?
I would recommend anyone to give it a go. It’s very different to both physiotherapy and seeing a chiropractor. It gets to the nub of the problem and you are treated as a whole, a somewhat holistic approach to the issues. Rhian is just wonderful and she has been treating me for over 30 years so that in itself is a true recommendation!
